About This Activity
Description
Youth Track and Field is the number one participatory sport among high school and middle school athletes. USATF (United States of America Track and Field) is dedicated to preparing youth track and field athletes for participation in this lifetime sport. Participation in this program is more than just competition; it is also FUN! Regardless of whether young athletes achieve a personal best, win a medal, or earn a shot at international competition, they will have the opportunity to make new friends and a lifetime of memories. Teams from all over Maine compete at local meets throughout the summer season, leading to regional qualifying meets and the State Championship meet. In the recent past, there have been a number of Falmouth athletes who have been top finishers in both running and field events. Over the years, a number of local well-known athletes got their start running in the USATF program here in Maine. Some names you might recognize are Joan Benoit Samuelson (marathon Gold medalist) and Anna Willard (steeplechase in Beijing Olympics). It is important to note that while these meets are competitive in nature, the overall goal is to have fun, learn about track and field events, improve fitness and achieve personal bests. Participants will have the option to decide from a number of events including sprints, mid-distance, long distance, jumping, shot put, discus, and everyone's favorite the Turbo Javelin. The official meet schedule will be given out at the first practice. Practices are held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and meets are held on Thursdays. *Those registering after the deadline on June 3 will be placed on a waiting list and should there be room in the program will be charged a late registration fee of $25 (this fee is in addition to the program fee). Meets tend to start earlier and return later depending upon size and location of the meet. Qualifying meet (10am on July 31) and State Meet (9:00am on August 9) extend beyond the regular season.
NO REFUNDS AFTER JUNE 3.
Participants must purchase their own USATF membership online at www.usatf.org and list as wishing to participate with the Falmouth Club #01-0041.
