In the morning from 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM, students will be joining Ms. Kim for Creative Writing Fun! In this class, students will be stretching their awesome imaginations and coming to class prepared to share their thoughts, creativity, and imagination. Students will be challenged to become better, more confident writers and thinkers. They will discover more about themselves and their world through writing. Students will read different works of literature from different genres such as, mystery, science fiction/fantasy, horror/suspense, fiction, poetry, adventure, and tall tales/fairy tales. The goal of the course is to enhance students writing skills (punctuation, writing mechanics, spelling, grammar) by allowing them to create their own works of literary art. From 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM, students will break for lunch. In the afternoon, from 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM, students will enjoy Hands-on History! Hands-on History encourages students to compare and contrast life in different eras in the past. Each week the students will experience the life and culture of three ancient empires: the Roman Empire, the Aztec Empire, and Feudal Japan. After a brief interactive lesson about the era, the students will be creating art; playing games; exploring the music, drama, and culture of each era. The students will also design and engineer a piece of architecture unique to each empire. They will craft Roman urns, play an Aztec game of Ullamaliztli, and create a zen garden. The students will explore the structural integrity of arches and apply that knowledge to build domes. By interacting with history hands-on, the students will have an enriching experience that will deepen their understanding and appreciation of each era.
