Six IN-PERSON sessions January 14, 21, 28, February 4, 11, 18 Jazz is a very diverse musical style that is aimed always at moving the audience emotionally. In this course we will examine some familiar styles of Jazz you might encounter – including big band, be-bop, swing, ragtime, modal, free jazz, blues, and Latin. We will discuss what makes Jazz be jazz, how to listen to Jazz, the forms and composition of Jazz (understandable for non-musicians), and how you can determine what Jazz you like and what you don’t. This course will be accessible to non-musicians as well as musicians. If you know nothing about Jazz – this course will introduce you. If you love Jazz, this course will help you to improve your appreciation. We will listen to recorded music and have live Jazz musicians for some sessions. We promise an experience that will be fun and informative. A BULLI instructor for 30 years, Robert Powers has taught countless courses on science, philosophy, psychology and religion. He is excited to bring his first course on music to BULLI. Robert was been a bass player in a number of jazz bands, including currently in "Just Jazz", a quartet that is playing venues in the Gainesville area.
