About This Activity

Instructor: Edwina Shannon Skill Level: All Levels Medium: Lettering / Calligraphy / Lecture / Art History Total Class Hours: 3 Description: Join us for an exciting slideshow lecture on lettering that has shaped artistic expression and how it evolved into the letters we use today, inspiring a sense of connection to a rich tradition! We will explore images from ancient civilizations of Sumeria, Egypt, Greece, Rome, and the fall of Rome, when regional alphabets developed (e.g., the Book of Kells), including cursive Roman. We will then move on to the reign of Charlemagne, when the alphabet was standardized and lowercase letters were introduced. With a quick overview of tools to use for different types of lettering, we will help you build confidence in your hand scripts - covering pen angle, letter angle, size, and proportion, so you can see the potential in each alphabet and tool.
