Overview: It's a bird, It's a plane… No, it's really a bird! Discover the birds that live locally, learn about their traits, and how humans use them as inspiration to build airplanes. Trip Description: Students will survey the local bird species around Avery Point, studying the unique beaks, wings, and behaviors that help them survive in a coastal habitat. Then, they’ll turn nature into technology by engineering model airplanes inspired by bird body shapes, testing their designs to see which flies the farthest. Learning Outcome: Use tools to identify local bird species, learn about adaptations of different bird species, and how body shapes help them to thrive in their environment. Ocean Literacy Principle #5: The ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems. Ocean Literacy Principle #6: The ocean and humans are inextricably interconnected.
