Overview: Students will investigate deep-sea animal adaptations that allow them to survive in such harsh conditions. Trip Description: Students will work in small groups to investigate deep-sea habitats, the animals that live there, and the adaptations they have to survive in these extreme environments. They will investigate the extremes of deep-sea environments by creating a model of a hydrothermal vent. Students will create their own deep-sea creature based on randomly selected adaptations and a unique habitat. Learning Outcome: Students will learn about the extreme environments of the deep sea and use that knowledge to design a deep-sea creature capable of surviving. Ocean Literacy Principle #5: The ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems.
