Instructor: Dr. Priscilla Eichler In this next-level class, young artists will build on what they learned in Art 1 and start exploring new techniques and ideas in a more focused way! Students will learn how to look more closely at shapes, patterns, and space, and begin thinking about how to plan and tell stories through their art. They’ll work with a wider variety of materials such as watercolor, acrylic paint, collage, and colored pencils and start to understand what makes a strong composition. We’ll also introduce important design ideas and encourage students to develop their own creative voice. In this class, students will: • Explore the elements of art: pattern, space, and value • Learn design ideas like balance and contrast • Will explore realistic and abstract ideas: observing details like shape, color, texture & proportion to make things look real • Will explore forms: 2D & 3D • Will explore concepts: landscapes, portraits, creatures, still life • Start using a sketchbook to plan, practice, and explore ideas Example Projects: • Patterned animal or creature portraits • Watercolor landscapes with depth and layered shapes • Mixed media storytelling collages
