In this semester long class, young artists will build on foundational art skills and start exploring new techniques and ideas in a more focused way! Students will learn how to look more closely at shapes, patterns, and space, and begin thinking about how to plan and tell stories through their art. They'll work with a wider variety of materials such as watercolor, acrylic paint, collage, and colored pencils, and start to understand what makes a strong composition. We'll also introduce important design ideas and encourage students to develop their own creative voice. Please note: Prior art class experience is not required to join this class. All young artists ages 7–8 are welcome! In this class, students will: Explore the elements of art: pattern, space, and value Learn design ideas like balance and contrast Explore realistic and abstract ideas — observing details like shape, color, texture, and proportion to make things look real Explore forms: 2D and 3D Explore concepts: landscapes, portraits, creatures, still life Start using a sketchbook to plan, practice, and explore ideas Example Projects: Textured still life drawings — using colored pencils and layering to build up value and realism Abstract shape creatures — inventing imaginary animals using bold pattern and color choices Collage landscapes with layered depth — building foreground/background using cut paper and paint
