About This Activity
Instructor: Jessica Lewis Geared toward upper middle and high school students with strong foundational skills, this class emphasizes both technical growth and conceptual development. Students will work across a variety of advanced materials—such as oil paint, charcoal, and printmaking—and explore big ideas through modern and contemporary movements like abstract expressionism and surrealism. As they build personal style and intention in their work, students will also begin preparing portfolios, engaging in peer critiques, and learning how to thoughtfully revise and refine their pieces. Please note: Taking Art 3 is not required to join this class. All young artists are welcome! What Students Will Learn: • Advanced principles of design: movement, balance, and emphasis • Techniques in painting, facial anatomy, and advanced drawing • Exploration of modern, abstract, surrealist, and contemporary art • How to critique, reflect on, and refine their own work and the work of others Example Projects: • Mixed Media: Create a striking paper abstract artwork by layering textures, colors, and materials for a unique and personal piece. • Ceramics: Design and craft elegant candlesticks, exploring techniques in hand- building and glazing. • Sculpture: Carve a foam block sculpture inspired by the work of renowned artist Henry Moore, focusing on form and abstraction.
