About This Activity
Capitalizing on their intrinsic curiosity and sense of wonder, students will hone their observation skills and record their findings in a personalized journal in which they will employ various mark-making techniques partnered with writing prompts to depict elements that they find outdoors. Students will be equipped with the skills that will accompany them forward into their lives so, in the words of the artist and naturalist L.W. Funk, “Those who enjoy nature will never be bored.” Goals: Translate classroom techniques into the field in order to describe and record details of various natural elements; Capture the wonder of the natural design of the world around us on the pages of our field journals, zooming in and out to form lifelong habits of observation; Grow in artistic skills: drafting from observation, familiarity and comfort with basic field mediums (Pencils, Pens, Colored Pencils, Watercolor Paints); Draw inspiration from other artists and explorers such as Beatrix Potter, John Muir Laws, Lilias Trotter, Lewis and Clark, Edith Holden, and Maria Merian. We’ll incorporate elements of their poems and field notes so students will gain ability in communicating through their art for future enjoyment.
