About This Activity
Discover the techniques and stories behind two iconic painting movements — surrealism and impressionism — in this exploratory painting class. Students will study the distinct characteristics of each style, from surrealism's dreamlike, imaginative imagery to impressionism's loose brushwork and focus on light and color, before creating their own original paintings inspired by each movement. Students will build essential painting skills, including how to mix colors to achieve the right hues, properly blend for smooth transitions, create washes for soft, translucent effects, and thin out paint for different textures and finishes. Students will also explore techniques for adding texture to their work, giving their paintings depth and visual interest. By the end of the class, students will have created their own surrealist and impressionist-inspired paintings, along with a stronger foundation in painting techniques they can apply to any future artwork.
