About This Activity
Instructor: Jessica Lewis Geared toward upper middle and high school students with strong foundational skills, this class emphasizes both technical growth and conceptual development. Students will explore painting and drawing through observation, imagination, and personal expression. Students will learn to draw and paint from life — studying still life, the figure, and the environment — to develop a strong understanding of proportion, light, color, and composition. They will also learn how to move beyond simply copying photographs by interpreting references creatively and infusing their work with mood, movement, and storytelling. As they build personal style and intention in their work, students will also begin preparing portfolios, engaging in peer critiques, and learning how to thoughtfully revise and refine their pieces. Please note: Taking Art 3 is not required to join this class. All young artists are welcome! What Students Will Learn: • Advanced principles of design: movement, balance, and emphasis • Techniques in painting, facial anatomy, and advanced drawing • Exploration of modern, abstract, surrealist, and contemporary art • How to critique, reflect on, and refine their own work and the work of others Example Projects: • Painting: Learn to see color, mix paint appropriately and paint from life. • Drawing: Study the contours and angles of facial anatomy and put them to use. • Drawing: Understand how to use a photograph as a handy reference tool. • Painting: Discover how to mix and paint realistic flesh tones.
