About This Activity
Explore the expressive possibilities of charcoal and graphite in this 4-week drawing class for ages 13–17. Students will learn how to combine these classic drawing mediums to create artwork with depth, contrast, and realism. Through guided demonstrations and hands-on projects, students will practice blending, layering, shading, and mark-making techniques while building a strong foundation in drawing. The course begins with the basics of perspective and composition before moving into observational still life drawing, value studies through a "blurry to sharp" shading exercise, and portrait drawing using the grid method to improve accuracy and proportion. Whether you're new to drawing or looking to sharpen your skills, this class will help you grow as an artist while encouraging creativity, confidence, and personal expression. Students will leave with several completed drawings, stronger technical abilities, and a deeper understanding of charcoal and graphite.
