About This Activity
Ever wondered how a design on a computer turns into something you can actually hold in your hand? In this introductory class, students find out — by doing it themselves! No experience necessary; this class is built from the ground up for first-time designers. Using beginner-friendly CAD software, students will learn to think in three dimensions, turning simple shapes and ideas into digital models ready for printing. Along the way, they'll pick up core skills in spatial reasoning, planning, and problem-solving — all while designing projects like custom keychains, fidget toys, and other fun, personalized creations. Students will also get a behind-the-scenes look at how 3D printers actually work: how a digital file becomes a physical object, layer by layer, and how small design choices can change the way a final piece looks and functions. By the end of the class, students will walk away with hands-on maker skills, a stronger grasp of STEAM concepts, and printed projects they designed themselves.
