Counselor-in-Training (CIT) – Take the Next Step Toward Leadership
The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program at YMCA Camp Ohiyesa offers teens ages 16–17 their first hands-on experience with what it takes to be part of the camp staff team. Over two immersive weeks, CITs grow into young leaders — learning how to work with children, support counselors, and build a camp experience rooted in fun, care, and connection.
Surrounded by the natural beauty of Fish Lake, CITs step into leadership roles while still enjoying the energy, adventure, and friendships that define the Ohiyesa experience.
Week 1: Learn the Tools of the TradeCITs begin with focused training sessions on child development, group management, conflict resolution, and camper engagement. They'll practice essential counselor skills and begin developing their own leadership style — with time built in for reflection, bonding, and, of course, traditional camp fun.
Week 2: Cabin Leadership & CelebrationOnce ready, CITs are placed in cabins with younger campers, working alongside senior staff to support day-to-day cabin life. They’ll assist with activities, help manage group routines, and learn how to lead with care and confidence. Frequent debriefs with leadership staff give CITs space to grow and reflect throughout the experience. At the end of Week 2, CITs celebrate with a special day trip off site — a recognition of all they've learned and contributed.

We understand plans can change. Because we plan meals, staffing, and supplies ahead of time, cancellations must be emailed to camp@ymcadetroit.org by Tuesday before your session. The following deadlines will be followed:
- Written cancellations received by January 31st: 100% of paid program fees will be credited to your YMCA account for future use.
- Written cancellations received on or after February 1st: No refunds or credits will be issued. A $50 cancellation fee per child, per week will apply.
- Written cancellations received on or after April 1st: No refunds or credits will be issued. A $100 cancellation fee per child, per week will apply.
- Registration fees and deposits are always non-refundable and non-transferable
