In this engaging, project-based afterschool program, students in grades 6–8 will explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) through interactive coding and engineering challenges. Students will experience both MIT Scratch and LEGO Robotics, rotating between game development projects and robot design challenges. With MIT Scratch, students will design and code games, animations, and interactive experiences while applying concepts such as loops, conditionals, variables, and custom blocks. Through LEGO Robotics, they will build and program robots that use motors and sensors to complete tasks, exploring how design choices and coding strategies affect performance. Throughout the program, students will strengthen their computational thinking, creativity, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills. They will practice breaking complex challenges into manageable steps, debugging code, refining prototypes, and presenting their solutions. No prior coding or robotics experience is needed. Instructors will provide support and opportunities for greater complexity as students develop their skills. Regular updates will be shared through ClassDojo so families can follow their child’s learning and celebrate their accomplishments.
