About This Activity

Description

***This Camp is for beginning Mountain Biking Riders. For riders with Mountain Biking experience, please look for our Intermediate Camp: #28137, 28138***

Learn to be comfortable on the trail. Learn braking, shifting, body position, pedal position, climbing, descending, cornering and navigating minor trail obstacles on the trails at Luscher Farm. Bring your own working bike and helmet.

***This Class has SAFETY and EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS***

In order to provide the safest possible environment for class participants, please make sure that:

  1. Your child's bike is in good working order. Please make sure that brakes are working and shifting (gears) is also working. Please make sure tires and brakes are not worn. Note: if the bike needs work: local bike shops may need a week to complete the work. Please budget this into getting the bike class-ready.
  2. Your child's bike has more than one gear. We will be climbing up hills.
  3. Your child's bike has a front wheel and rear wheel hand brake. No coaster brakes.
  4. Your child's bike has tires with knobby tread suitable for riding off-road.
  5. Your child's bike is a good fit. A bike too big or too small can pose safety concerns.
  6. Your child's helmet fits correctly. Helmets need to be free of cracks and damage. Helmets need to be worn correctly (i.e., covering the forehead)
If we feel that your child's bike or helmet are not safe, they will not be allowed to ride during class.

Skill Level: I (Beginner)

Fitness level: Easy/active

Come learn the fundamentals of mountain biking in a fun and safe environment.

We will practice:

  • Braking
  • Shifting
  • Body position
  • Pedal position
  • Climbing
  • Descending
  • Cornering
  • Navigating minor trail obstacles
We will also cover:
  • Tire inflation
  • Fixing a flat
  • What to carry with you on a trail
  • How to take care of your bike
Skills will be taught using the following structure:
  1. First we explain what the skill is and when you would use it. Then we will explain how to do the skill and what it should feel like.
  2. We demonstrate the skill so you have a visual of what the execution of the skill looks like.
  3. We have you practice the skill, in a progressive manner with lots of the skill looks like.
  4. Apply the skill out on the trail (if conditions allow).
The focus will be on progression of skills. Our goal is to create a safe and welcoming environment. We will make sure no one gets left behind.
We will also cover group communication, trail etiquette, and basic bike maintenance. Classes will be led by an IMBA certifies mountain bike coach.
The majority of the classes will be at Luscher Farm where we can practice skills in an open area to reduce intimidation and provide an excellent learning environment. By the end of the series we hope to be ready for fun at "The Quarry", Lake Oswego Parks & Rec's bike park near East Waluga Park.
