Embark on a contemplative journey into the soul of Japanese culture through the beauty of the written word. This course is an introduction to Japanese writing designed for beginning-level learners. Rather than focusing on conversation, normally offered as a separate course in the spring, this course focuses on reading and writing by engaging with the rhythms and characters of haiku, folk songs, and the imagery and playful wordplay of modern and contemporary poems from Japan. Using the meditative practice of pencil calligraphy, you will learn to recite and write soulful text while discussing universal themes of humanity and nature. Keiko has taught Japanese at Bates College since 2015.
