About This Activity

Reduction block printmaking, often credited to artist Pablo Picasso, results in unique, multi-colored prints that are produced through multiple inkings and printings on the same paper using different ink colors as more and more of the original block is altered or removed. In this two session class, students will create a series of unique prints using special Styrofoam plates and Akua water-based inks. In the first class, the plates will be incised using engraving tools and other implements including stencils, knives, scissors, and more. Students will work with at least four colors of ink, moving from light colors to dark. In the second class, another series of prints will be made by exploring the use of Akua inks resist techniques to create additional colors and more painterly effects on the prints.
