About This Activity
Description
Black Culture Camp is in residence at Crenshaw Family YMCA this summer! Black Culture Camp is a vibrant, six-week summer experience where creativity, culture, and community come together!Running from June 16 through July 25, 2025, this full-day camp is designed for students entering Kindergarten through age twelve. Blending Black Studies, art-making, and performance practice, the camp offers an enriching space for young minds to explore Black culture, history, and identity in meaningful and joyful ways.
Campers will dive into hands-on arts activities, engage with stories from the African diaspora, and build confidence through performance—all while making new friends and unforgettable memories.
Spaces are limited, so don’t miss your chance to be a part of this inspiring and educational summer journey!
YMCA Members receive a $25.00 waiver on the registration fee. The enrollment fee is $350.00 per week and financial assistance is available to qualifying families.
Curriculum:
Week 1 – Black Oral Traditions (June 16–20) Spoken word, rap, and storytelling. Project: Hip-Hop and Poetry Showcase. (Closed June 19 for Juneteenth)
Week 2 – Chocolate Cities (June 23–27) Black urban planning and civic leadership. Project: City model build and mock election.
Week 3 – Music & Murals (June 30–July 3) Street art and Black musical genres. Project: Group mural and dance performance. (Closed July 4)
Week 4 – Fables & Legends (July 7–11) Theater and storytelling from African and diasporic traditions. Project: Student plays with costumes and movement.
Week 5 – Africa Week (July 14–18) Exploration of the continent’s visual and cultural arts. Project: Collaborative art book auction.
Week 6 – Rhythm & Resistance (July 21–25) The role of music and protest in Black liberation and joy.

This sign-up ensures that all necessary YMCA waivers and permissions are completed for participation in the Black Arts Camp, hosted at the Crenshaw YMCA. Please note that this is a pre-registration step—you will receive a follow-up to complete full camp enrollment.
