About This Activity
Description
The outdoor nature play program is designed to foster a connection with the natural world. Through guided exploration and sensory activities, children are encouraged to engage with the environment around them. The philosophy behind the classes is to give children open-ended weekly outdoor play ideas to develop life skills including, but not limited to, persistence, wellness, sensory play, creativity, focus, problem-solving, empathy, and communication.
Note to caregivers: Each class begins with sharing photos and facts about an animal. We will be exploring the park area; I request that everyone please wear closed-toe shoes.Week 1 - Millipede & Giant Desert Centipede - we will build an insect/arthropod habitat for a pretend millipede! (Book to share: The Boy with Flowers in His Hair by Jarvis)
Week 2 - Vinegaroon/Whip Scorpion - we will explore how acids and bases react! (Book to share: Ricky, the Rock That Couldn't Roll by Jason Miletsky)
Week 3 - Southwestern Long-nose Snake - we will explore building with what we can find around us and then knock it down, if we want! “Making and breaking” is a schema that helps children learn through play by getting to experiment with the materials around them (ex: what new things can be created from the pieces of something else?). (Book to share: Beneath by Cori Doerrfeld)
Week 4 - Desert Banded Gecko/Western Banded Gecko - we will make an obstacle course and see how explorers can move like lizards! (Book to share: This is the Tree We Planted by Kate McMullan)
Designed for children aged 1 to 12. Must be accompanied by an adult.
Nature class takes place no matter the weather! We will seek shelter from rain; however, I encourage anyone that wants to embrace the elements to do so as long as there is no lightning. Some children like to explore with their whole body, and I recommend bringing a change of clothing and/or a towel. I provide a bucket of water for rinsing hands and there is a bathroom at the park, if needed. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
