About This Activity
Description
Students get their first look at the mathematics and history of secret communication, trying their hand at decoding and creating encrypted messages using a classic cipher. Through a focused pattern-recognition challenge, they begin to see the logical and mathematical thinking that underpins the way we protect information. This workshop introduces cryptography as a creative puzzle—and reveals that mathematics has always been at the heart of keeping secrets. (JO-C)
