About This Activity

Level II For ages 6 to 9. From CGSUSA: "The elementary age child is captured by the image of the True Vine. “I am the vine, you are the branches, whoever remains in me, and I in him, will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.” The proclamation responds to the deep need of these children to better know his or her relationship with God, family, friends, and the larger community. Moral parables offer a model for comparing their behavior with that of the Pharisee, the Tax Collector, or the Good Samaritan. The elementary children see the parts of the Mass—the Liturgy of the Word, the Preparation of the Gifts, the Eucharistic Prayer, and the Communion—as one unified prayer made of many smaller prayers." The child's work in the Level II program is "Mass Centered". It focuses on the relationship with Jesus, the Good Shepherd which finds its most concrete and intense moment of life in the Eucharist. The experiences in the program serve as an invitation to and preparation for the liturgical life the children will share with adults in the church. Generally speaking, children celebrate the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion during the second year of Level II Good Shepherd. First Communicants will undergo a discernment process as part of their Sacramental Preparation. Parent(s) of the 2023-2024 Good Shepherd First Reconciliation and First Communicant Children must attend a Sacramental Preparation Overview Meeting in person with their child. Dates and times for mandatory First Communicant parent/child Sacramental Preparation meetings will be distributed at the Sacramental Preparation Overview Meeting. The children will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. -11:30 a.m. and The Sacrament of Eucharist on Sunday, May 19, 2024, from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Please note: All Good Shepherd children receive their First Communion dressed in the White Garment.
