This is our first High School level course, designed for students who attended Middle School German (Grade 7). German language competency required to enroll in German 3: Understanding: The student should be able to follow conversations related to topics like school, work, hobbies, leisure time, and everyday situations. By the end of the year, language skills across all four areas should be at least at a high A2 level. Students will build confidence using a dictionary to support comprehension. Speaking: Students should enter German 3 with solid presentation skills to help prepare for the DSD exams, which can potentially be taken at the end of the course. Throughout the year, students will make significant progress as they advance from an A2 toward a B level of language proficiency. Reading: The student should be able to read fluently in German, including short books, articles, workbook texts, and newspaper articles. He/she should be able to understand complex instructions and transfer them into action, using a dictionary as needed. Writing: The student will review and gain confidence in spelling conventions (e.g. "k"/"ck", "tz"/"z", "das"/"dass") and sentence structure. By the end of the year, the student should be able to write essays related to workbook topics and express hopes and wishes in writing. Grammar: Topics covered over the course of the year include: capitalization and comma rules, identifying subjects and predicates, verb tenses (including past tense and past perfect), cases, declension of adjectives, modal verbs, causal and concessive clauses, and comparative and superlative forms. Please look at our Saturday School Policies for special restrictions and regulations for course credit eligibility.
