German language competency required to enroll in Middle School German: Understanding: The student should be able to follow conversations related to topics like school, work, hobbies, and current events shared in the news and on the radio, with growing confidence throughout the year. Speaking: The student should be able to speak freely about daily situations in complete German sentences, string together multiple sentences to convey short narratives, and discuss topics related to family, friends, school, and hobbies. Practice in public speaking will prepare students for Saturday School High School and exams such as DSD and AP. Reading: The student should be able to read and follow any kind of short book and article, use a dictionary, respond to texts using citations, and understand adventurous stories and their characters. Reading strategies for analyzing different text types, including factual texts, will be developed. Writing: The student should be able to share his/her own opinion in German and make arguments in writing. The student should be able to compose different types of texts (e.g. fairy tales, essays, emails, letters, and fantasy stories), write about occasions and incidents, and craft stories and essays with climactic points that add expression to their writing style. Grammar: Topics covered over the course of the year include: future I, clauses of time, relative pronouns, nouns, substantives, articles, verbs, adjectives, personal pronouns and their declension, possessive pronouns, and demonstrative pronouns.
