German language competency required to enroll in AP German Language and Culture: Understanding: The student should be able to understand any conversation relating to a High School students’ field of experience (e.g. school, family, hobby, sport, pets etc.). Speaking: The student should be able express anything they want to say relating to a wide range of age-appropriate topics, e.g. school, family, hobby etc. The student should be able to talk about his/her own life and interests. She/he should be able to answer questions regarding these topics. Reading: The student should be able to read, understand, and answer questions about texts relating to age-appropriate topics. Writing: The student should be able to repeat statements of classmates, peers, in his/her own words. (subjunctive I, "... sagt, dass ..." not expected at this skill level). The student should be able to express and explain his/her own opinion and conclusions. The student should be able to describe his/her own experiences related to the topics explicitly. Grammar: The student should be familiar with a simple German sentence structure, relative sentences with pronouns, and indirect questions. Infinitives with "zu", pronouns, and superlative adjectives and adverbs should be in the student's grammar repertoire. Subjunctive II, haben, sein, werden, können, mögen, assumptions and requests as well as the tenses, past tense, past perfect, and future I should be familiar.
