German language competency required to enroll in AP German Language and Culture: Understanding: The student should be able to understand any conversation relating to a High School student's field of experience (e.g. school, family, hobby, sport, pets, etc.). Speaking: The student should be able to express anything they want to say relating to a wide range of age-appropriate topics (e.g. school, family, hobby, etc.). The student should be able to talk about his/her own life and interests and answer questions regarding these topics. Reading: The student should be able to read, understand, and answer questions about texts relating to age-appropriate topics. Writing: The student should be able to repeat statements of classmates and peers in his/her own words (Subjunctive I / "… sagt, dass …" is not expected at this skill level). The student should be able to express and explain his/her own opinions and conclusions, and describe his/her own experiences related to the topics explicitly. Grammar: The student should be familiar with simple German sentence structure, relative clauses with pronouns, and indirect questions. Infinitives with "zu", pronouns, and superlative adjectives and adverbs should be in the student's grammar repertoire. Subjunctive II with haben, sein, werden, können, and mögen — including assumptions and requests — as well as the past tense, past perfect, and future I should also be familiar.
