This course is designed for students who have completed German 3 (Grade 8-9). Students who have not taken the Fall Semester of this course are strongly advised to discuss placement with the Head of Saturday School prior to enrollment. German language competency required to enroll in German 4 HNRS: Understanding: The student should be ready to understand the main ideas of complex texts about both concrete and abstract topics. He/she should be able to follow various types of content on TV or radio and summarize the main ideas. Speaking: The student should be able to share his/her point of view and discuss topics such as different ways of living, work, and school in increasingly complex sentences. At a B2 language level, speaking should become more and more natural for the language learner. Reading: The student should be able to fluently read texts and articles at a B2 level. Writing: The student should be able to write in complex, structured sentences, analyze short slogans, and refer to the main content or idea in an essay. He/she should be able to present the pros and cons of different topics in essay form. Grammar: The student should know enough German grammar to write and speak without being misunderstood. He/she should be able to apply negation and comparisons with als/wie and je… desto/umso, and identify modal and passive sentence structures.
