This is an entry-level German as a foreign language course for children in Grades 1–3. No German language pre-requirements are needed for the Fall Semester, though most students will have completed the Kindergarten course and have some minimal German knowledge. Students must be able to read and write in their native language by the Spring Semester. German language competency required to enroll in DaF Level 1: Understanding: No requirements for the Fall. By the Spring, the student should be able to understand basic words and simple phrases. Speaking: No requirements for the Fall. By the Spring, the student should have a basic repertoire of words and phrases and be able to speak the sounds of the phonetic table. Reading: The student should be familiar with phonetics and able to read the first words in his/her native language, with the alphabetizing process underway. By the Spring, the student should also be able to read simple phrases learned in class. Writing: The student should be familiar with phonetics and able to write the first words in his/her native language. By the Spring, the student should be able to write simple words and phrases taught in class. Grammar: No requirements for the Fall. By the Spring, the student should have an intuitive understanding of grammar. The Paul, Lisa & Co. Starter Set is designed to support the student's natural use of language; no explicit grammar exercises will be given at this stage.
