Students who have not taken the Fall Semester of this course are strongly advised to discuss placement with the Head of Saturday School prior to enrollment. German language competency required to enroll in DaZ Level 1: Understanding: In the Fall, the student should be able to understand simple spoken German and follow instructions given in short sentences. By the Spring, he/she should understand a basic vocabulary of words and phrases used in a classroom setting, follow simple instructional directives, and assign phonetic sounds to the correct letter or letter combination covered in class. Speaking: In the Fall, the student should be able to express basic ideas or needs in German; long sentences are not expected. By the Spring, the student should have a basic classroom vocabulary, express ideas and needs in simple sentences, and correctly pronounce the German phonetic sounds covered in class. Reading: No requirements expected for the Fall. By the Spring, the student should be able to read simple words with letters learned in the Fall Semester and separate words into syllables. Writing: No requirements expected for the Fall. By the Spring, the student should be able to write simple words with letters learned in the Fall Semester and separate words into syllables. Grammar: No requirements expected for the Fall. By the Spring, the student should have begun to gain an intuitive understanding of how German grammar works. The textbook is designed to support young students' natural use of language; no explicit grammar exercises will be given at this stage.
