This is an A1 level German as a foreign language course for children in Grades 1–3. Students who have not taken the Fall Semester of this course are strongly advised to discuss placement with the Head of Saturday School prior to enrollment. German language competency required to enroll in DaF Level 2: Understanding: The student should be able to understand basic words and simple phrases. By the Spring, the student should be able to understand short sentences about themes such as sports, leisure activities, school, colors, and animals, as well as simple statements about time and numbers up to 20. Speaking: The student should have a basic repertoire of words and phrases and be able to speak the sounds of the phonetic table. By the Spring, the student should be able to form short sentences in the present tense, express likes and dislikes, pose and answer Yes/No questions, and have simple conversations with 1–2 exchanges. Reading: The student should be familiar with phonetics and able to read simple phrases learned in class. By the Spring, the student should be able to read and understand short texts of 3–4 sentences, including imperative work instructions, with reasonably correct pronunciation. Reading materials: Paul, Lisa & Co. work and course book. Writing: The student should be able to write simple words and phrases. By the Spring, the student should be able to correctly spell key vocabulary words and respond in writing to short question prompts about time, likes/dislikes, and school activities. Grammar: The student should have an intuitive understanding of grammar. By the Spring, the student should be able to conjugate key verbs in the first three forms (ich, du, er/sie/es), assign definite and indefinite articles to key vocabulary nouns, and form short statements and questions with correct word order.
