German language competency required to enroll in DaZ Level 2 – Fall Semester: Understanding: The student should be able to understand an expanded German vocabulary of words and phrases used in a classroom setting, and should be able to follow simple instructional directives. The student should be able to assign phonetic sounds to the correct letter or letter combination of the German alphabet, for those letters and letter combinations covered in DAZ Level 1. Speaking: The student should have an expanded German vocabulary of words and phrases used in a classroom setting, and should be able to express his/her ideas and needs in the classroom in simple sentences. The student should be able to correctly pronounce German phonetic sounds for those letters and letter combinations covered in DAZ Level 1. Reading: The student should have knowledge of all German letters and sounds covered in DAZ Level 1, and should be able to read out loud simple words containing the learned letters and letter combinations. The student should be able to read and follow instructions containing one directive or statement. The student should be able to read texts of 2-5 short sentences consisting each of 3-8 words. Writing: The student should be able to write all the German letters covered in DAZ Level 1. The student should be familiar with the sound of each letter, which is the foundation for writing. The student should be able to write short words, correctly complete short words with gaps, and determine spelling similarities between groups of words. Grammar: The student should have a somewhat intuitive understanding of how German grammar is used. The Tobi Series is designed to support young students’ natural use of language.
