About This Activity

This is the continuation of DaZ Level 1. Students who have not taken the Fall Semester of this course are strongly advised to discuss placement with the Head of Saturday School prior to enrollment. German language competency required to enroll in DaZ Level 2: Understanding: The student should be able to understand an expanded German vocabulary of words and phrases used in a classroom setting and follow instructional directives — progressing from simple to more complex multi-task instructions. The student should be able to assign phonetic sounds to the correct letters and letter combinations covered in DaZ Level 1. Speaking: The student should have an expanded classroom vocabulary and be able to express ideas and needs in sentences of increasing complexity. He/she should correctly pronounce German phonetic sounds covered in DaZ Level 1. Reading: The student should know all German letters and sounds from DaZ Level 1 and be able to read simple words and sentences aloud. By the end of the year, the student should be able to read texts of approximately 10 short sentences (3–10 words each) and follow multi-step instructions. Writing: The student should be able to write all German letters covered in DaZ Level 1 and write short words and phrases. By the Spring, the student should be able to complete short and medium-length words with gaps and fill in the blanks in short sentences. Grammar: The student should develop an intuitive understanding of German grammar, progressing toward correctly applying articles and conjugation in most cases. The textbook supports natural language use; no explicit grammar exercises will be given at this stage.
