German language competency required to enroll in DaZ Level 3: Understanding: The student should be able to understand all classroom instructions and simple stories and texts based on classroom vocabulary. By the Spring, the student should be able to follow topic-related phrases and content such as shopping, family, personal information, school, and activities. Speaking: The student should be able to express him- or herself in simple German, ask and answer simple questions, and handle short social exchanges. By the Spring, the student should be able to communicate about simple topics and activities. Reading: The student should know all German letters, phonetic combinations, and sounds, and be able to read at German first-grade level with correct pronunciation. By the Spring, the student should be able to read short texts and find context-relevant information, including understanding personal information and letters. Writing: The student should be able to write simple sentences and short stories (approx. 3–5 sentences) and apply phonetic spelling rules. By the Spring, the student should be able to write short notes and messages and express thoughts and ideas in writing. Grammar: The student should be aware of German articles (der, die, das), have intuition for declension and conjugation in oral communication, know to capitalize nouns, and be aware of basic written sentence structure. By the Spring, the student should be able to apply some conjugation and declension with a growing vocabulary of nouns, verbs, and articles.
