German language competency required to enroll in DaZ Level 4: Understanding: The student should be able to understand topic-related phrases and content, follow workbook and textbook instructions, and begin to follow conversations about age-appropriate topics (e.g. family, school, pets, etc.). Familiarity with Umlaute is expected by the Spring. Speaking: The student should be able to communicate about simple topics and activities, confidently handle short social exchanges, produce and present small texts, and answer questions about topics covered in class. Reading: The student should be able to read short texts, find context-relevant information, and read and understand personal information and letters. Writing: The student should be able to write short notes and messages using correct sentence structure and express thoughts and ideas in short texts (approx. 5–8 sentences). By the Spring, the student should correctly apply capitalization. Grammar: The student should be able to apply conjugation and declension, use some correct articles, and develop understanding of abstract nouns over the course of the year.
