German language competency required to enroll in DaZ Level 5: Understanding: The student should be able to understand and follow regular conversations, with a growing vocabulary encompassing family, friends, school, leisure, and sports. By the Spring, the student should be able to follow more complex classroom instructions. Speaking: The student should have a basic vocabulary to express needs, opinions, and ideas in short sentences and simple structures. By the Spring, the student should be able to express thoughts on any kind of topic covered in class. Reading: The student should be able to independently read simple sentences and understand instructions and texts in the work materials. By the Spring, the student should be able to read texts of approximately 50–150 words from the workbook with reading comprehension. Writing: The student should be able to write longer sentences and a story based on a sequence of images (Bildergeschichte). By the Spring, the student should have developed writing skills in preparation for essay writing. Grammar: The student should be able to apply correct sentence structure, use correct articles with increasing frequency, apply conjugation and declension, and grow their noun and verb vocabulary. By the Spring, the student should be familiar with nouns ending in -chen and -lein, group listings with commas, and write interrogative sentences.
