German language competency required to enroll in DaZ Level 6: Understanding: The student should understand expository and instructional statements in clearly pronounced German, be able to ask about or look up unknown vocabulary, and understand all kinds of questions. By the Spring, the student should be able to maintain a back-and-forth conversation with at least 3 exchanges. Speaking: The student should be able to speak in complete German sentences, fill vocabulary gaps with gesture or explanation, and string together multiple sentences to convey short stories of moderate complexity. Reading: The student should be able to read and follow stories of multiple pages and poetry, use a dictionary, and respond to a text using text citation in arguments. Writing: The student should be able to apply German phonemes (e.g. J vs. Y, Sch vs. Sh) and write several connected paragraphs. By the Spring, the student should be able to independently use a dictionary when writing texts. Grammar: The student should be familiar with noun genders and cases. By the Spring, the student should be able to find grammatical information such as plural forms and verb tenses in dictionaries.
