German language competency required to enroll in Middle School German – Fall Semester: Understanding: The student should be able to follow conversations related to topics like school, work, hobbies and actual situations shared in the news and on the radio. Speaking: The student should be able to speak freely about daily situations in complete German sentences. The student should be able to string together multiple sentences to convey short narratives of moderately complex meaning. Reading: The student should be able to read and follow any kind of short book and article. The student should know how to use a dictionary. The student should be able to respond to a text and use text citation in arguments. Writing: The student should be able to share his/her own opinion in German, and to begin to make arguments in writing. The student should be aware of and able to compose different types of texts e.g. fairy tales, essays, emails, letters, and fantasy stories. Grammar: The student should be able to apply future I, clauses of time, and relative pronouns in written and oral use. S/he can find grammatical information (plural forms, verb tenses) in dictionaries.
