This is a Beginner (A1) German as a foreign language course for children in Grades 4–6. No German language pre-requirements are needed for the Fall Semester. Students who have not taken the Fall Semester of this course are strongly advised to discuss placement with the Head of Saturday School prior to enrollment. German language competency required to enroll in OBA 1: Understanding: No requirements for the Fall. By the Spring, the student should be able to understand basic words and simple phrases learned in class. Speaking: No requirements for the Fall. By the Spring, the student should have a basic repertoire of words and phrases and be able to apply them in simple conversations. Reading: The student should be able to read in his/her native language. By the Spring, the student should be able to read simple phrases learned in class. Reading materials: Beste Freunde A1.1 work and course book. Writing: The student should be able to write in his/her native language. By the Spring, the student should be able to write simple words and phrases learned in class. Writing material: Beste Freunde A1.1. Grammar: No requirements for the Fall. By the Spring, the student should have a basic understanding of German grammar, including: verbs such as spielen, sein, heißen, haben; nouns and articles in nominative; personal pronouns; negation; prepositions; definite and indefinite articles; modal verbs; and the polite form "Sie".
