This is a B1 level German as a foreign language course for children in Grades 4–8. German language competency required to enroll in OBA 3: Understanding: The student should be able to understand conversations and articles related to topics like public places, solar eclipses, weather, and careers. By the Spring, understanding will expand to include topics such as organizing a party, traveling, sightseeing, school lunch, and directions. Speaking: The student should be able to speak with correct pronunciation and have enough vocabulary to express themselves in daily situations without long hesitation. Confidence and fluency in spoken German will grow significantly throughout the year. Reading: The student should be able to read short instructions and course material. By the Spring, reading ability will expand to include more complex texts and books as language confidence grows at the B1 level. Writing: Writing is used throughout the year to support reading comprehension via multiple choice and gap-fill exercises. By the Spring, writing becomes more skilled as more grammar rules are applied and sentence structure expands. Grammar: Fall topics include: personal pronouns in dative, the conjunction trotzdem, the preposition seit + dative, indirect questions, questions with welche/r/s, conjugation of haben, and prepositional verbs such as sich interessieren für, wissen über, and sprechen über. Spring topics add: temporal prepositions, subordinate clauses, question words including welche, different tenses, and relative sentences.
