About This Activity

TRClass powered by Onshape Instructor-led, Technology Education Program for students in Grades 7 -12 | Ages 12-18 In this introductory CAD course, students are introduced to Onshape as a CAD tool for a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics team. This unit helps students see the value in using a CAD system to effectively plan, collaborate, and streamline a successful season. This course is designed to walk students through how a robot can be built using existing part libraries. This unit will ask students to insert and mate many parts in assemblies. We recommend new students start with the Onshape Assembly Basics lesson if they have little to no experience using CAD or are new to assembling in Onshape. Learning Objectives: - Reasons to use CAD with a robotics team - How CAD is used with all sub teams - Explore the Onshape user interface - How to navigate around large models - Introduction to collaboration tools - How to edit models in Onshape - What is a mate? - What is a mate connector? - How to use mates to define part relationships - How to work with large assemblies - How to access part libraries - How to use offsets with mates - How to reorient axes within mates
