About This Activity

Goal: To develop a portfolio for a student whose artistic needs are not being met in a regular classroom setting and would like the time and space to explore their creative expression. This course will focus on the development of a working artist portfolio for 6th-12th grade students who are interested in a visual artist development program. The student’s course work aims to meet the entry requirements of a selected High School Arts Program for admittance. The portfolio development and foundations class is based on The Elements of Art and The Principles of Design. Art Historical components, Cultural Movements and the study of individual artists’ work will be addressed. Objective: To create a strong portfolio that is a reflection of the student’s personality and achievements. The Elements of Art and Principles of Design will be used throughout the course, empowering the student’s ability to critically describe and explain their own art and the work of others. This course will encompass observational drawing, mixed-media, and painting. In Practice: Students will work to develop a visual art portfolio. The portfolio can include such student art works as contour drawings, observational drawings, still life studies, self-portraits, creative drawings, paintings, and 3-dimensional works. The coursework will emphasize developing visual skills utilizing various art media. The students’ artwork will incorporate visual concepts that reflect The Elements of Art (space, color, shape, form, value, texture, and line) and The Principles of Design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity).
