About This Activity

This course introduces students to the art of ekphrastic poetry, or poetry written in response to visual art. Well-known examples include “Ode on a Grecian Urn” by John Keats and “Starry Night” by Anne Sexton. Each class will combine close readings of ekphrastic poems from various historical periods with examination of the artworks that inspired them. Students will explore a wide range of artistic traditions to find pieces that spark their own creative responses. In-class writing sessions, guided exercises, and individualized feedback from the instructor will support students as they develop their craft. The course also includes a field trip to NOMA, offering the opportunity to write directly in the presence of original artworks. By the end of the term, each student will have produced a small, curated portfolio of original ekphrastic poems. No prior experience in creative writing is required. Supplies: (1) Notebook or looseleaf paper (2) Pen or pencils
