Strategic Thoughts (ST) would like to help enhance Audubon Gentilly After-school experience by creating a school chess club. ST provides chess instruction using a 4–16-week curriculum that is vertically aligned to meet Common Core Standards. We offer each student free online Chesskids.com accounts that allow players to continue chess education at home or on a mobile device and allow us to monitor student progress. The game of chess helps young people learn to concentrate, think logically, overcome obstacles, spot patterns, and categorize information. It helps develop problem-solving skills, planning, patience, and self-discipline. Chess is a competitive activity, but good sportsmanship and fair play are taught as essential game elements. A scholastic chess club challenges students while helping build confidence and self-esteem. It offers a combination of educational and social activities.
