In this imaginative semester class, students become authors, illustrators, screenwriters, and artists as they bring their own stories and characters to life through words, images, and mixed media. Students dive into the building blocks of great storytelling — plot, setting, characters, conflict, and suspense — as they write and illustrate an original story from start to finish. Students may also choose to write a screenplay, exploring the three-act structure, dialogue, sluglines, and basic script formatting. Each class includes sharing and feedback in small groups. At the end of the semester, students will learn traditional, hardcover bookbinding techniques using hand sewing. Through drafting, revising, and refining, each student transforms their work into a beautifully bound book they can keep forever.
