About This Activity

This one day camp is offered four times over the summer: June 16 & 17, July 14 & 15. Select the date that aligns with your student's age (5-7 or 7-10). HEADDRESS MAKING: Big Queen Rita Dollis is overjoyed to lead a headdress-making class that utilizes Masking Indian skills & techniques. Campers will use feathers, gemstones, glitter strips, and more to construct personalized pieces to take home! She encourages all young artists to arrive comfortably so they can remain engaged with this captivating class! MEET THE INSTRUCTOR: Big Queen Laurita "Rita" Dollis (she/her) is a renowned figure in Black Masking Indian Culture, serving for over 35 years as the Big Queen of the Wild Magnolias. As the wife of the late, legendary Big Chief Bo Dallis, she transitioned from sewing suits to pioneering leadership, breaking tradition and reshaping the culture. Rita Dollis has had her handmade suits displayed in museums around the city, such as the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane and JAMNOLA. She is thrilled to share her artistic techniques with a new generation of artists.
