Students will be carving two of their own personal symbols: One in Serpentine stone (an amulet carving) and one in Honeycomb Calcite (a talisman carving). An amulet is a protective object, deflecting negative energy (an example is the Eye of Horus from Ancient Egypt, which protected against illness). A talisman draws positive energy to the wearer/owner, (an example is a horseshoe to bring good luck). Using the reductive process of stone carving, participants will learn how to “rough out” forms using a handheld rotary tool, refine the forms using rasps and files, sand to achieve an even surface and finally, seal and polish the carvings. The first two classes will be dedicated to modeling students’ ideas in water-based clay. These clay studies will serve as references for our carvings. Supplies (not included in supply fee): 3 Particulate filtering masks goggles/eye protection china marker
