This class explores the rich traditions of West African dance and Caribbean folklore dance through movement, rhythm, and cultural learning. Students will discover how these dances journeyed from West Africa to the Caribbean and across the diaspora, evolving over time while preserving deep cultural roots. A live drummer—an essential element of these traditions—will accompany the class, enriching students’ understanding of rhythm. Children will also have opportunities to try drumming themselves. Emphasis is placed on building a sense of community and understanding the power of storytelling through art and culture. Classes encourage joy, connection, and cultural openness, helping students broaden their horizons through dance.
