In the African Drumming class, students explore the rich cultural traditions of the West African djembe drum orchestra. By learning the unique roles of traditional instruments like the djembe, songba, kinkini, and dundun, students discover how individual regional rhythms come together to create a powerful, collective sound. Throughout the course, participants master core percussive elements—such as hand placement, rhythm recognition, call-and-response, and "the break"—while developing a command of complex timing patterns. No matter their initial skill level, students build confidence and stage presence.
