Completion of the below prerequisites must occur prior to registration & enrollment in the class:
Prerequisite 1: Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence - Candidates may use goggles during the Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence. Candidates will need to jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 150 yards (6 lengths). After swimming 150 yards, candidates will maintain their position at the surface of the water without support for 2 minutes by treading without the use of their arms. After treading for 2 minutes and maintaining a position at the surface, swim 50 more yards (2 lengths). Candidates must swim continuously, keeping their face in the water and demonstrating good breath control. Candidates may use the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. No sidestroke or backstroke permitted.
Prerequisite 2: Timed Event - Candidates will not use goggles for the timed event. The proctor drops a 10-pound brick 20 yards from the starting point in the competition pool. Candidates will have 1 minute, 40-seconds to complete the following sequence:
Starting in the water, swim 20 yards with face in or out of the water. At the submerged brick, demonstrate either a feet-first or headfirst surface dive to retrieve the 10-pound brick. Candidates are to resurface; swim 20 yards, returning on their back while holding the brick with both hands at the surface. Candidates are to keep their face at or near the surface and may not swim the distance underwater. At the finish, candidates are to place the brick on the deck and exit the water without the use of the steps or ladder. Time stops when the candidate is out of the water.
